What is an estuary? What can it be? A vibrant living interface where species breed and bacteria decompose. A porous filter with its own logic and rhythms in constant reborn-ing. An effervescent threshold. Estuaries are receptive shields that defends life and diversity, networks of interspecies in cooperation and patchworks of hybrid information. Estuary thinking is multivalent and pluriversal — an experimental framework that celebrates complexity.

Estuary Thinking is a living research around collective containment narratives which are situated and, at the same time,  translocal. Estuary thinking emerges as a space that opens up space, beyond nationalist narratives and as an interspecies alliance, towards a more expansive ‘We’. This concept and  investigative thread emerged in and with Estuario de la Plata, South America, 2024.

How can we generate epistemologies from the waters? What are the languages and literacies of the waters? How can we approach natures from an ecocentric lens? How can we re-link ourselves to other species, re-negotiating sedimented hierarchies?

Estuary Thinking was exhibited within the exhibition Diasporic Visions of Liminal Spaces at Lage Egal Berlin, curated by Bitwixt & Between curatorial team on June 2024.
